NEW DELHI: BRS MLA P Kaushik Reddy 's offer to send saris and bangles to 10 party legislators who defected to the Congress was met with a fierce response from Congress leader B Shobha Rani , who removed her footwear and cautioned the BRS MLA about his remarks.

Reddy's comments sparked outrage among the ruling party's women leaders , who demanded an immediate apology.

During a press conference on Wednesday, the Huzurabad constituency MLA Reddy said, "If the defected MLAs have any shame or guts, they should first resign from their posts and face fresh elections. I will be sending each of them saris and bangles. They should wear them and move in public." He also threatened to send the items to the defected MLAs' residences by courier.

Rani, the chairperson of the Telangana State Women's Cooperative Development Corporation, criticising Reddy for insulting women with his disrespectful comments, said, "A woman is the President of the country. It was a woman, Sonia Gandhi, who granted Telangana state. Women were at the forefront of the Telangana struggle. Kaushik Reddy has insulted women with his rubbish talk."

Angered by Reddy's remarks, women leaders of Congress said that he should first send the items to BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao and working president KT Rama Rao, claiming they had initiated the defections.

They also called on the Telangana State Women's Commission to take notice of Reddy's comments and urged the Speaker to suspend him from the Assembly, threatening to file a police complaint against him.

10 BRS MLAs and several BRS MLCs joined the Congress after the 2023 Assembly polls, which saw the party end the BRS' decade-long reign in Telangana.

BRS legislators KP Vivekanand and Kaushik Reddy met with the State Legislative Assembly Secretary on Wednesday, requesting that the disqualification petitions of three party MLAs who had joined the Congress be placed before the Speaker to schedule a hearing, as directed by the Telangana high court.
