Delhi CM designate Atishi meets families of Karol Bagh victims, announces Rs 10 lakh compensation

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister designate and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi announced on Wednesday that the families of those affected by the Karol Bagh building collapse incident, which claimed the lives of 4 people, will receive a compensation of Rs 10 lakh.

Atishi visited the injured individuals and the families of the deceased at the RML Hospital in the evening and assured them of financial assistance, stating that the building owner would face legal action.

Atishi told ANI, "As you all know after a building collapse incident in the Karol Bagh area on Wednesday morning, people residing in the structure were stuck in the debris. Around 15-16 people were rescued from the site. Some of the injured are being treated at the RML Hospital while others are undergoing treatment at the Lady Hardinge Hospital."

She further expressed her condolences, saying, "It is sad that as many as 4 people died in the building collapse incident. Many of the deceased were non-residents of Delhi. Delhi government will give compensation amount of Rs 10 lakhs to the families of the deceased persons. Appropriate compensation will given to those who suffered injuries in the incident. Legal action will be taken against the building owner."

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) also released a statement regarding the incident, stating that the two-storey building that collapsed at around 9 AM in the Bapa Nagar area of Karol Bagh Zone was very old. The MCD mentioned that teams from DFS, NDRF, and MCD immediately rushed to the site upon receiving the information, and the rescue operation has been completed. The MCD further noted that the area falls under the Special Area category, and the plot size is approximately 25/30 Sqm.

The reason for the collapse is yet to be determined, and the building was not considered dangerous during the pre-monsoon survey conducted by the Maintenance Department. Additionally, no new construction was being undertaken, and no building materials were found around or in the collapsed premises.

According to Delhi police, 4 people lost their lives, and 14 others were injured in the house collapse incident.

Earlier in the day, Atishi instructed the district magistrate to provide all possible assistance to the victims and appealed to the public to inform the government about any potential incidents in the future to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
