NEW DELHI: Jammu Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) MLA Qaiser Jamshaid Lone on Friday said that when he was a teenager, he considered becoming a militant after he was "tortured and humiliated" by an army officer during a crackdown.
However, Lolab Mla said, his "faith" in the system was restored after a senior officer intervened. Lone made these comments while participating in the Motion of Thanks to the Lieutenant governor's address in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Lone explained that the incident occurred during a crackdown in his area when he was in 10th grade. He was one of 32 youths who were singled out for questioning about a youth who had joined terrorists.
Recalling the incident, Lone said that in response to the army officer’s question, he told him that he knew the youth. "I said yes I know him because he lived in our area. I was beaten up for that. Then he asked me if the terrorist was present in the crackdown. I replied in the negative and I was beaten up again," he recalled.
Later, a senior officer arrived and spoke to him. "He asked me 'what do you want to become in life?' I told him I want to be a militant. He asked me the reason and I told him about the torture I had gone through," Lone told the House.
The NC added that the senior officer publicly reprimanded the junior officer, which restored his "faith in the system."
He also mentioned that out of the 32 youths who were questioned, 27 later joined militancy.
