NEW DELHI: A female law student was allegedly gangraped on her college campus in South Kolkata’s Kasba, sparking citywide outrage. Coming nearly a year after the RG Kar case, the incident has reignited women’s safety concerns and led to a political slugfest between ruling TMC and its main opposition BJP in state.
BJP leader Dilip Ghosh strongly criticised chief minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of ignoring the safety of women in West Bengal.
Speaking to ANI, Ghosh said, "Mamata Banerjee does not see such incidents. Crimes against women are increasing in West Bengal, and women are afraid to step out of homes... TMC should at least condemn such acts..."
He also reacted sharply to TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee’s controversial remark on the case. Kalyan had said, "I am not an advocate into the incident that occurred at the Law College but the accused should be arrested. A few men commit this type of crime... But what can be done if a friend rapes his friend. Will the police be there in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)? This (South Calcutta Law College) is a government college. Will the police always be there?"
Dilip Ghosh responded, "He should be ashamed. He is a senior leader, lawyer... He should motivate people to protest against such incidents..."
BJP demands Mamata's resignation
West Bengal BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh called the incident a reflection of the TMC's mindset.
He told ANI news agency: "This incident reveals the character of TMC, their thoughts towards women. I demand the immediate resignation of Mamata Banerjee as the CM of West Bengal. Under her rule, no one is safe..."
He added, "This is not about a marriage proposal. I think this was quite pre-planned... It is very shameful for our state, for every citizen of Bengal - the way criminal activity, especially atrocities on women, is increasing day by day, I don't have any words... Everywhere you will see brutality towards women. I always think that the deteriorating culture of Bengal is only due to the irresponsible behaviour of Bengal CM. Whenever any kind of attack happens on women, her comment is very loosely addressed, encouraging criminals to repeat the thing. Criminals even feel safe under her regime. So, this is the outcome that the party in power, the accused person and the other students are giving threats to the girl that her parents will be arrested, her boyfriend may be killed. Such threats may be given by a person who knows what power he holds... This incident reveals the character of TMC, their thoughts towards women. I demand the immediate resignation of Mamata Banerjee as the CM of West Bengal. Under her rule, no one is safe..."
BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan also hit out at the TMC government and Mamata Banerjee personally.
ANI quoted BJP's Kesavan saying, "The dignity and security of our sisters and daughters are facing serious threat under Mamata Banerjee's misrule and TMC regime... Most startling fact is Mamata Banerjee above all is a woman, the Chief Minister and Home Minister who controls the police department in the state... Yet, we see this ghastly crime being committed in a law college affiliated to the government and one of the main accused is an active TMC student council member. Why is Mamata Banerjee so unsympathetic and insensitive to the safety and protection of women? How does a TMC member have such unfettered access to a college where he's no longer a part of, and how can he summon students at will like this?... How can people of West Bengal even hope to get justice when MPs and senior members of the ruling party make such appalling, incorrigible statements?... The only way to ensure and protect the sisters and daughters of West Bengal is to throw out this TMC regime, which the people will do..."
TMC's response
TMC leader and minister Shashi Panja said she was deeply disturbed by the incident but defended the swift police action and accused the BJP of politicising the issue.
She said, "There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs. Trinamool Congress Student wing is not teaching the students to rape. The police took immediate action, and within 12 hours of the complaint, three people were caught. They are in custody, and the investigation is on. Their mobile phones have been seized, and the victim's statement has been taken. She has named the accused. It has been taken seriously. The BJP cannot even think the way Kolkata police swung into action. They started maligning since such swift action is missing in the BJP-ruled states. If they want to be in Bengal as a responsible Opposition, then they have to behave responsibly."
What happened
The alleged gangrape happened on Wednesday evening inside the campus of South Calcutta Law College in Kasba. The police arrested three accused - Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20)-within 24 hours.
All three were either former students or staff at the college.
