Six international migrants, including individuals from India and Pakistan, have lost their lives following an incident involving Mexican soldiers near the Guatemala border . The Mexican Defence Department reported that the event occurred late on Tuesday in the southern state of Chiapas , specifically near the town of Huixtla.

According to the defence department's statement, soldiers opened fire on a truck carrying migrants after claiming they heard gunshots as the vehicle approached their position. The truck was reportedly carrying migrants from several countries, including Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, India, and Pakistan.

After the shooting, soldiers approached the truck and discovered four migrants dead, with twelve others injured. Two of the wounded later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to six. The condition of the remaining ten injured individuals has not been disclosed. Local prosecutors confirmed that all deceased migrants died from gunshot wounds, though it remains unclear whether they were struck by army fire or if any weapons were found in the truck.

The two soldiers involved in the incident have been relieved of duty while investigations are underway. In Mexico, incidents involving civilians can lead to civilian prosecution, but soldiers may also face military courts martial.

A total of 33 migrants were on board the vehicle, with 17 others unharmed.
