'I truly believe ... ': What police said after third assassination attempt on Donald Trump

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said law enforcement likely prevented another assassination attempt on Donald Trump following the arrest of a suspect near the former president's rally in Coachella Valley on Saturday. This was the third attempt on the former president's life since July.

“I truly do believe we prevented another assassination attempt,” Bianco told reporters on Sunday. The suspect, Vem Miller, was apprehended at a checkpoint about a mile from the rally site, armed with a loaded shotgun, handgun, and high-capacity magazine, according to police. He was also carrying a fake press card and entry pass.

In a joint statement, the FBI and US Secret Service stated that the incident did not impact Trump’s security, adding, "Former President Trump was not in any danger." No federal arrest has been made, but investigations are ongoing.

Despite this, Sheriff Bianco remained firm in his belief that Miller posed a serious threat. “I probably did have deputies that prevented the third assassination attempt,” he said. “If we’re at a point where this doesn’t raise alarm, we’ve got a serious problem.”

Miller, a 49-year-old Las Vegas resident, is believed to be associated with a right-wing anti-government group. He was arrested while driving an SUV and has been released on $5,000 bail. He is due to appear in court in January 2025.

On July 13, 2024, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. He was shot in the upper right ear by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who fired eight rounds from an AR-15-style rifle, killing one audience member and injuring two others before being killed by Secret Service. On September 15, while golfing in Florida, Trump faced another threat from 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, who aimed a rifle at his security detail. Routh was captured and indicted on multiple charges, including attempted assassination.
