Fears of traffic disruption on Sringeri–Karkala road due to landslide

Continuous monsoon rains have triggered another landslide near the Nemmara–Salmara stretch of National Highway 169 on Monday, raising concerns over possible road closure between Sringeri and Karkala.

The region had already witnessed a landslide last week, halting traffic temporarily. With the southwest monsoon gaining intensity over the past two days, the situation has worsened. Monday saw relentless rainfall across the taluk, with the Tunga river swelling and flowing above normal levels.

Ongoing highway development work has further complicated the situation, as clearance activities near houses at the entry point of the highway have left loose soil. With the heavy rain, slush and debris are now flowing onto the main road, making driving conditions hazardous.

Authorities are closely monitoring the area as the risk of further landslides looms, potentially disrupting travel and connectivity in the region.
